Oh? If you're here to protect me, that means you'd be by my side during gravest of perils. Who would say no to that?

You, probably. Ideally, it doesn't come to that, because even you should know better than to stick yourself in situations like that in the first place.

Certainly. I enjoy doing what I like.

[ "Should" is doing so much heavy lifting in that sentence. Midnight should be a lot of things, honestly. ]

Why would you be ill-suited to a test of courage? Would it simply be too easy?

Something like that. Not that much scares me.

And walking in the dark definitely isn't anything I need support with. This is almost peaceful.

[ aside from all the Unsettling Feelings but nothing's truly acting on them so it's fine? ]

Well, a test implies that there's a means of doing poorly at the exercise... If it was a graded affair, you'd succeed at it.

[ Midnight hums. ]

You wouldn't be particularly easy to scare, though, were that the goal of the exercise. Simple entertainment. "Fun". In that sense, one wonders if this venue has had the intended effect on you at all.

[ ... He is rambling a tiny bit, it is warm, and despite himself, his eyelids are beginning to droop. Er... he... probably should have slept a bit more last night. Or tried instead of immediately giving up? Oh, well. At least they're almost free of this tunnel! ]

[ He's starting to ramble. Now why does that sound familiar? She's starting to wonder if she should have brought water with her.

Not that she needs to coddle this man. He's a grown-ass man. A grown-ass man with questionable self-care habits or lack thereof, but still.

She slows her steps a little, to observe. To see if it still feels like they're being followed. ]

Probably not. I keep telling you, you're wasting your time on me. I don't really think of a place like this as "fun." Or any place here.

[ It is no one's job to look after Midnight! Midnight would quite agree with that himself. When he was living on the landship, with 10 or more medical professionals hovering around him, those people were being paid quite well. His friends are paid in... what? Excessive vampire affection? Can't feed yourself with that.

As far as Midnight can tell, the constant feeling of being watched or followed is similar to the eyes in the bowling alley. No one ended up being there, either... but it sure did feel like something was about to happen. ]

Wasting my time... I must ask, Miss Gebura, what you think my goal is when I ask to spend a bit of time with you?

To flirt with me with no hope of actual reciprocation because you're a masochist.

[ promptly. ]

You're charming shtick probably actually works on other people. You'd get their attention and whatever else, so you're better off with them.

Do you really think that being in your company is that painful...? I like it, you know. The honesty. It's nice to know that you'll always be exactly who you are, regardless of how the world changes around you. It's stable. Sometimes, even I appreciate that sort of thing...

[ ... Midnight is now suddenly very aware that he should sit down. Soon. Uh. Well, the exit is right there, so he can make it, probably, but his grip does tighten a bit as the realization strikes him. ]

I think if you're looking for stability, you could probably also find it with someone...

[ But she trails off, brows furrowing. Because it's next to impossible not to notice that his grip just tightened, and she doesn't think she's going to answer her if she just asks him why, but her fingers tap against his wrist in silent question. ]

... Else.

[ She concludes. Normally. No concerned pause here. ]

[ ... Well, it's not like they're trapped this time. Midnight just laughs, but doesn't let go of her wrist. ]

I prefer you, but the atmosphere in here hardly lends itself well to romance, does it? Let's be off.

[ Not a cry for help. Just a preference. Barely even a suggestion. Gebura could push them both back into the tunnel and Midnight wouldn't bat an eye. ]

[ Well, it's warm and stuffy. Outside at least is fresh air, so there's no real reason to keep him in here. Rather, her deciding to stay in the tunnel is just going to encourage him to say some other flirtatious line, so Gebura sighs under her breath and starts walking again, tugging him along with her. ]

Fine with me. Let's go.

[ They make it to the mouth of the tunnel, and the exit, because of course they do. They are a pair of adults with full ambulatory capabilities, good nerves, more than adequate teamwork. They even make it to the rest area beyond, the two rows of rickety aluminum benches where one might wait for friends to disembark from a journey.

Midnight lets go of Miss Gebura, walks over to sit on the bench. He blinks, somewhat dizzy.

When he opens his eyes, he is horizontal. Uh. He doesn't remember that happening, can barely get a sense of where he is or what's around him. He's seeing stars, and that ringing in his ears is sure loud...? ]

[ Gebura watches him move over to the bench.

... And then watches him transition swiftly from sitting to horizontal and without a word, she strides over to join him, leaning over him with her arms folded over her chest. ]

I'm going to get you water. Do not move. Don't even think about protesting or my entire foot is going down your throat. Got it?

[ Midnight makes a very confused "Hnnnhhh?" noise, which at least means he's going to be too out of it for a second to argue. Whether that actually amounts to an answer is debateable... But at the very least, he doesn't actually make an attempt to move?

When he actually resurfaces from his fainting spell, Gebura's left. He doesn't move, because he's pretty sure that staying in place is how people find each other again, but he is a little worried that she won't come back. Not actually, but maybe a little. ]

[ His scant amount of worry is unfounded, she is reluctantly returning!!

With bottles of water. Colder ones this time, one of which she is unceremoniously plunking the bottom of right against his forehead. ]

You know, it's actually more of a pain for me if you try to play it off instead of just saying something.

[unrequite]

[ He flinches, slaps his face a couple of times trying to grasp the water bottle, but grasp it firmly he does. He doesn't get up just yet, though, he has to... recalibrate. And not die of embarrassment. (... Yes. Yes, actually. He's embarrassed. Right now, he is mortified.) ]

I don't think there's much to be concerned about. I... didn't realize that would happen.

[ ... He's still playing it off. Ooh, he knows it too. Stupid. This time, he's actually being stupid. ]

[ Her eyes narrow. And there's actual anger simmering in her voice, not just irritation or exasperation. ]

Do you think I'm an idiot, Midnight?

[unrequite]

[ ... Now there's a frightening tone. Does Midnight like it, necessarily? No. He likes Gebura, though. He likes her enough to wince a little instead of shrug it off. ]

I wouldn't... no.

[ Said in the voice of a man who understands that there is no winning in this kind of debate. He's bracing... ]

[ He's lucky he's a wilting flower right now, because the urge to grab him by the collar and shake him until his neck snaps is so incredibly strong, but if he passes out or dies, he can't take responsibility for his mistakes.

But she is still emanating "Try to be coy and I will kill you" vibes. ]

Then try again. What the hell's been going on with you?

[ Surprisingly enough, if he'd known this would happen back in the tunnel, he still would have said he likes being with Gebura. Or maybe it's not all that surprising.

He pushes upright, shakes his head. It... seems to have passed somewhat, so he risks going upright enough to open the bottle of water. What indeed. What the hell is going on, indeed. ]

... I admit that I don't know where to start.

[ But that isn't a new problem. Give him a moment to think. ]

In terms of what's changed since the first time we met until now... I suppose I've been eating and drinking a bit less. [ ... Coy answer. Midnight sighs. ] Much less. It's... something I was supposed to be seeing a medical professional for. Among other things.

[ "Among other things" is still coy, but it's more of an answer than he offered before so Gebura huffs a little under her breath and then crosses her arms over her chest.

He lives, for now. ]

It's got to be more than a lack of appetite if you were seeing a professional for it. Can you not keep food down?

[ ... Well, this is probably the least enthused Midnight's been to have a conversation with Gebura in the time they've known each other. So many nice topics to have, and they had to land on this one...? He's not stupid, he knows it had to happen at some point, but he rarely actually thinks or plans that far. ]

It's that, partially. The other part is.

[ Something that Gebura can't fix, really, but if he said that it was irrelevant, he'd be lying. Ah. ]

The young man in the mall. The one I was... following. [ Midnight tilts his head side to side, thinking about how to phrase this. ] He paid my agent to poison me. Slipped Originium in my food. It damaged my digestive system a bit.

[bemist]

[ This could have been avoided if he had chosen to leave Gebura alone. Like. Indefinitely. So this is just inevitable, probably.

... She has no idea what the hell Originium is, just that he's called it a poison. He's still alive, obviously, but permanent damage to the digestive system isn't exactly ideal. It's something having a lot of money in the City could handle, but this isn't back there and neither is his home. ]

[ She's accepted the explanation, at least. But-- ]
